“The deportation measure of Mullah Krekar remains in force,” Local Government and Regional Development Minister Erna Solberg (Conservative Party) told Norsk Telegrambyra [NTB]. On Tuesday [17 February 2004] Mullah Krekar was released from detention in the criminal case being prosecuted against him. The police have said that new information from Iraq made it relevant to release him from protective detention, but he is still under indictment. Local Government and Regional Development Minister Solberg said that the appeal of the deportation measure was being heard. Until a clarification happens there, the deportation measure will be upheld. To date, she said, there was nothing that required the initiative to be dismissed. There are two different legal reasons that are the basis for the criminal case and the deportation measure respectively. The minister for local government and regional development added that the deportation measure was not based on the type of information that had been examined in connection with the criminal case.
