Guerrillas launched dozens of mortars and rockets at the main U.S. prison in Baghdad and troops killed one Iraqi as they returned fire Wednesday evening, the U.S. military said Thursday. The attackers fired 33 mortar rounds and five rockets at the Abu Ghraib prison, where U.S. forces hold hundreds of Iraqi detainees, at about 6:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m. EST), a U.S. military official said. “Coalition forces engaged and killed one enemy as he tried to flee the scene.” U.S. soldiers arrested 55 others at the scene.
