NATO’s secretary-general said Thursday his top priority is peace and stability in Afghanistan and that a decision on the alliance’s role in Iraq must wait until a legitimate Iraqi government is set up. On his first trip to London since taking the new job, former Dutch foreign minister Jaap de Hoop Scheffer met with Prime Minister Tony Blair, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw and Defense Secretary Geoff Hoon. “We cannot afford to lose in Afghanistan,” said de Hoop Scheffer, who has urged countries to provide more troops to allow NATO to expand its peacekeeping operation. “What kind of role NATO can play and will play in Iraq is very much dependent on the political developments there.” Full Story
