Air travellers faced a fresh terror alert as British Airways cancelled a pair of much-disrupted services to Washington and Riyadh following government warnings of a security threat. “Following advice from the government we have cancelled the two flights due to security reasons,” a BA spokeswoman said, adding only that it was acting on British government advice. “We take our lead from the advice we take from the government as to what action to take,” the spokeswoman said. The flights called off were BA 223 to Washington on Sunday and BA 263 to Riyadh on Monday, which had been due to carry 184 and 149 passengers respectively from London’s Heathrow airport. These two services have already been at the centre of a string of alerts this year linked to fears of a repeat of September 11, 2001, when the al-Qaeda terror group hijacked and crashed a series of planes on New York and Washington.
