Mexico’s powerful drug cartels have unleashed a wave of violence on a scale not seen since the turf wars that consolidated smuggling routes and territories a decade ago. The discovery last week of a mass grave containing at least 12 bodies under the patio of a house in the border city of Ciudad Juarez ended a month of shootouts and assassinations which left about 70 more dead. Investigators are questioning 13 state policemen, and have issued arrest warrants for four more, including a state commander, after an alleged hit-man confessed that he helped kill and bury the victims on the orders of the Juarez drug cartel and a senior police officer.
