The EU may name, shame and blacklist foreign airlines failing to meet safety standards after outrage over the crash of an Egyptian jet, it was announced yesterday. New measures are being put in place to list suspect non-EU aircraft and harmonise safety checks and procedures for sharing information, the Irish transport minister, Seamus Brennan, said. The laboriously negotiated agreement between the European parliament and EU governments, brokered by Ireland as the current holder of the EU presidency, was reached only after 148 people died on January 3 when a Flash airlines Boeing 737 crashed into the Red Sea.
