British soldier dies in Kabul blast

A suicide car bomber killed a British soldier and injured four others in the Afghan capital, Kabul, yesterday, raising the fear of an Iraq-style bombing campaign in the relatively peaceful city. Last night it was claimed that the bomber was a British national born in Algeria. The attack occurred during a memorial service for a Canadian peacekeeper killed by a suicide blast on Tuesday. Western forces in Afghanistan had previously faced only one suicide attack since the fall of the Taliban two years ago. “Initial reports indicate that one of our British comrades lost his life and there have been several injuries,” said Major General Andrew Leslie, deputy commander of the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf).
