A roadside bomb exploded Thursday in a central Iraqi city, wounding 11 Iraqis, a day after thousands of Shiite Muslims protested in the south to demand the resignation of the U.S.-appointed provincial governor. In Baghdad, the commander of coalition forces said the recent arrest of a top al-Qaida operative showed that Osama bin Laden’s terror network was trying to gain a foothold in Iraq. Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez refused to say whether there were active al-Qaida cells in Iraq, but he cited recent suicide attacks as examples of tactics similar to those used by the terror network.
