The United Nations has said it is willing to send a team of experts to Iraq to decide whether it will be possible to hold early elections. They will meet a broad range of Iraqis, Secretary General Kofi Annan said. But the mission will have to be cleared by UN security officials who will go to Iraq in the next few days, he said. The US-led coalition has been resisting pressure from Shia Muslims to hold direct elections before it transfers power to Iraqi leaders in June. “I strongly hold to the idea that the most sustainable way forward would be one that came from the Iraqis themselves,” Mr Annan said in a statement in Paris.
