Serbia and Montenegro said on Friday its army would complete the destruction of 1,200 shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles next week to show support for U.S. efforts in combating terrorism. The United States has asked all its friends to dispose of man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) because of the potential threat they pose to civilian and military aircraft if they fall into the wrong hands. “We want to show our goodwill and readiness to reduce the risk of MANPADS falling into the hands of terrorists by destroying these 1,200 pieces,” a military official told Reuters. A Ministry of Defense spokeswoman said a ceremony attended by the U.S. ambassador would be held on January 23 at a military compound 50 kilometers (31 miles) west of Belgrade to mark the completion of a destruction project begun last year.
