Zimbabwe’s opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has testified for the first time in his 11-month treason trial. He denied plotting to assassinate President Robert Mugabe shortly before the disputed 2002 presidential election, won by Mr Mugabe. Mr Tsvangirai told a packed courtroom that he used to regard Mr Mugabe, who led the struggle against white minority rule, as a “liberation hero”.
