California’s local governments may be complaining that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s budget cuts will hurt public safety but U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said on Wednesday that $700 million in federal dollars is there for the asking. At a meeting in Los Angeles, Ridge and the governor discussed speeding the flow of federal funds to cash-strapped city and county governments facing cuts to emergency services because of the state’s budget woes. The League of California Cities has strongly criticized a proposal in Schwarzenegger’s budget that shifts $1.3 billion in local property taxes to the state’s coffers to help close an $18 billion deficit.
