Democratic presidential hopeful Richard Gephardt said on Tuesday the United States should do more worldwide to fight the causes of terrorism like poverty and ignorance that President Bush has largely ignored during his White House tenure. The Missouri congressman, in a speech to the Council of Foreign Relations, said Americans had several warnings before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks but failed to act. “You’ve got to deal with the symptoms,” said Gephardt, who took time off from campaigning in Iowa for Monday’s caucuses to meet the group of policy analysts and business leaders. “The greatest failing of this administration is that they are doing little to deal with the root causes of this problem. This is a serious, long-term, multi-layered problem,” Gephardt said in response to a question from the audience. Full Story
