A US citizen shot dead last week by gunmen who attacked a bus carrying him and a dozen colleagues in western Guatemala was not a missionary with the Mormon church, a church spokesman said in a statement. Brett Richards, 52, was a tourist as were the other members of the group, and had not been representing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints based in Salt Lake City, spokesman Dale Bills said. Authorities said the group was traveling back to the United States by land via Mexico. “To clarify, the group of Latter-day Saints that was attacked in Guatemala by armed robbers this past week — an attack that left one of the group dead from a gunshot wound to the chest — were not missionaries for the Church,” a statement said.
