DAMAGING new computer viruses sent by e-mail and instant message services have begun to infect Australian computers, as anti-virus experts yesterday warned consumers to brace for a big year of computer terrorism. A belated-but-malicious Christmas-themed worm virus called PE-QUIS.A or Quis has arrived in Australia in e-mails with the subject “Merry Christmas”. Once the attachment is opened, the virus infects some programs and overwrites ringtone files. If an infected computer is restarted, the virus also subjects the computer user to a quiz including questions such as “Which keyboard layout is used in Belgium?” If the questions are answered correctly, the virus directs the user to a website telling how to remove the worm.
