Israel’s foreign minister said Thursday his country would be ready to talk to Libya if Tripoli renounced “terrorism” and scrapped mass destruction weapons, but declined to say if talks had already taken place. Following reports of Israeli-Libyan contacts, minister Silvan Shalom told a news conference during a visit to Ethiopia that publicity would harm any secret initiative. “Every information on a process being conducted in secrecy, be it right or a misinformation, could be harmful to Israeli efforts,” he said, speaking in Hebrew. “If Libya changes its attitude toward Israel and stops backing terrorism and destroys its weapons of mass destruction, Israel will be ready to open dialogue with Libya,” he said.
