Anti-Smuggling War Goes 'Eye' Tech
This year, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) added a stethoscope-like instrument to its anti-smuggling tool kit. The $22,000 fibrescope, which has a miniature camera at its tip, lets ICA officers probe even the tiniest spaces in vehicles. Linked to a computer monitor, the instrument can spot small quantities of illegal drugs or pirated DVDs hidden inside car doors. It can even peer into holes no larger than the head of a screw.
