After the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Gen. Pervez Musharraf made a bold choice to reverse his country’s support for the Taliban government in neighboring Afghanistan, and instead to ally Pakistan with the American campaign against terror. But the general has since cracked down on Islamic militants in Pakistan selectively and inconsistently, mindful of his political skin in a country where the militants maintain a fair amount of support among some segments of the public and important political parties, and even within parts of the military.
