A Yemeni political and religious figure arrested in Germany and accused of funneling millions of dollars to the al-Qaida terrorist network pleaded innocent to U.S. charges Monday. Sheik Ali Hassan al-Moayad was extradited from Germany in November to face charges alleging he plotted to provide material support to Osama bin Laden and to the Palestinian Islamic group Hamas. A Yemeni diplomat said outside the courtroom that al-Moayad, a leading member of his country’s Islamic-oriented Reform Party, should be returned to his homeland rather than face trial in the United States. “People in Yemen don’t believe he’s involved in such activity,” diplomat Yahya Alshawkani said.
