At least eight Palestinians were killed and 34 wounded during a major Israeli raid on a refugee camp in southern Gaza launched hours after two Israeli army officers died in a grenade attack, sources said. Palestinian medical and security sources said the eight who were killed in the Rafah refugee camp, including a policeman and a rescue worker, had died after exchanges of fire with Israeli troops during the operation, which involved some 15 jeeps and armoured vehicles. Medical sources added that another 34 people had been injured, eight of whom were in serious condition. Among those injured were three children aged between three and five, they added. The raid, which the Israelis said was aimed at destroying tunnels used to smuggle weapons under the border with Egypt, began hours after the two soldiers died in a grenade attack by a Palestinian militant in the centre of the territory.
