West African leaders warned at a summit in Ghana that the region will never lift itself from squalor if it remained notorious as a hotbed of conflict and instability. “Time is not on the side of west Africa,” said Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the executive secretary of the 15-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). “It is one of the few remaining regions in the world where impoverishment is deepening instead of lessening.” Chambas told AFP a closed-door session of the heads of state was dominated by “frank and open” discussions of the impact the region’s conflicts and volatility had on its economic growth.
