A land mine explosion killed six Angolan staff members of the international humanitarian organization CARE, the group said Thursday. The December 12 explosion happened in the central province of Bie, where the men worked with a farmers’ association training program, CARE spokeswoman Lynn Heinisch said from Johannesburg, South Africa. The victims, contract workers for CARE, were riding in a tractor and trailer which drove over a land mine. Five died on the spot and a sixth died in a hospital Tuesday, CARE said in a statement Wednesday. The tractor driver, Paulino Quintas, suffered head injuries, but was listed in good condition Thursday. CARE delayed announcing the accident until it had notified relatives. Full Story
