Some 2,000 recently disarmed Afghan militiamen today paraded in Kabul as part of a U.N.-sponsored program aimed at dissolving factional militias and replacing them with a new national army, Associated Press reports. Afghan Defense Minister Mohammed Fahim and foreign dignitaries including U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad attended the parade. The U.N.-sponsored plan envisages disarming as many as 100,000 Afghan fighters within three years. Militiamen who hand in their weapons are offered vocational training and money to help them return to civilian life. Full Story
