A suicide car bomber wounded 58 US soldiers in northern Iraq before dawn while three Iraqis died in a blast at a Baghdad mosque and an American helicopter was forced down by ground fire. Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Pease told AFP the massive car bomb that exploded outside a US military base near Mosul wounded 58 American soldiers and an Iraqi translator — despite the efforts of a young sentry who fired almost 100 rounds as the car accelerated toward the base. Five of the wounded were medivaced to hospital, four to Baghdad and one to Germany, said the commander of 1st/187 battalion of the 101st Airborne Division at this town about 45 kilometres (28 miles) west of Mosul.
