Israeli intelligence said that a Canadian national arrested last month on a trip to his Gaza homeland had been recruited by the hardline Hamas movement to assassinate a senior Israeli official in the United States. Canadian authorities protested last week after the Israeli embassy in Montreal said that Jamal Akel, 23, originally from Nusseirat in the central Gaza Strip but now a Canadian citizen had admitted preparing attacks against Israeli targets in North America. The Canadian foreign ministry said such comments were “unacceptable” while an inquiry was still ongoing. But a statement issued by Israel’s Shin Beth security services on Monday said that Akal had confessed during questioning to being tapped by the hardline Islamist movement. Full Story
