A general strike has been held in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region of south-eastern Bangladesh. A political party for the region’s indigenous people called the strike to protest at the government’s failure to implement a peace deal, signed in 1997. The treaty ended a 20-year rebel war by promising local people more autonomy. The strike was held at a time of increasing tension between indigenous people, whom the government refers to as tribals, and the security forces.
