Georgia’s new leadership consolidated its grip on power following the overthrow of President Eduard Shevardnadze, when parliament appointed a key opposition figure to the second highest government post. The post of minister of state was given to Zurab Zhvania — an ally of leading opposition figure Mikhail Saakashvili.
