Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of Israel has hinted that he will consider eventually evacuating civilians from some isolated settlements in the Gaza Strip, as he prepares to renew talks with the Palestinian leadership. Palestinian officials and Western diplomats who have been briefed on the Israeli proposal say they expect Mr. Sharon to offer to remove civilians, while leaving soldiers in place to hold the land until a final deal is reached with the Palestinians.
