Afghan Forces Hunt Taliban After Attack

Taliban guerrillas attacked a road checkpoint in southern Afghanistan, killing three militiamen and wounding two others, an official said Wednesday. In the attack, about 30 suspected Taliban, traveling in four vehicles, attacked the checkpoint in southern Helmand province’s Sangin district late Tuesday, said Dad Mohammed Khan, the provincial intelligence chief. Khan said one attacker was killed before the insurgents retreated, taking the body with them — but the Taliban denied any of its fighters died in the fighting. Taliban spokesman, Hamid Agha, speaking to The Associated Press by satellite telephone, said three soldiers were killed, but none of its fighters were hurt. Full Story
