Turkish Islamist militants with possible links to the al-Qaeda network are thought to be behind the bloody synagogue bombings in Istanbul, officials said on Tuesday as the city’s Jewish community laid its victims to rest. Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said clues uncovered in the probe suggested a link with Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda, adding that a definite conclusion depended on the outcome of DNA tests. Israeli Parliament Speaker Reuven Rivlin, in Istanbul for the funeral of the six Jews killed in the attacks, said investigators believed two foreign-trained Turkish suicide drivers detonated the car bombs outside the synagogues during Sabbath prayers on Saturday. The blast claimed 25 lives, most of them Muslim passers-by. “We found out here in Turkey, along with our friends in Turkish intelligence forces, that the two terrorists, actually Turkish civilians, were educated in Afghanistan and trained in Iran,” Rivlin told a news conference.
