Allies of Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze bused in thousands of people Tuesday for a rally outside parliament in a bid to shore up his rule in the face of opposition pressure for his resignation. But the rally failed to take off, with some of those listening to speakers denouncing the opposition’s “fascism and extremism” unsure why they had come.
