The US has announced it is shutting its embassy in Sudan for a week in response to a “specific threat”. The mission in Khartoum – which is closed on Tuesday because of a US national holiday – will remain shut for a week from Wednesday. “This action is the result of a credible and specific threat to US interests,” an embassy statement said. The statement also warned Americans to “maintain a low profile and to avoid large gatherings of foreigners”. The embassy in Khartoum distributed Monday’s announcement to the local American community through an unofficial “warden” system – a network of contacts which distributes information by word of mouth. Officials at the embassy, which is in the city centre, told reporters that the security situation would be reviewed and it was hoped that normal operations could resume next week. Full Story
