6 Afghans Die in U.S. Raid, Reports Say

American forces began a large-scale airborne assault against suspected Taliban and other antigovernment forces in two mountainous northeastern provinces over the weekend, a United States military spokesman said Monday. The operation is the first big sweep by the American military against fighters in the remote mountains of the Hindu Kush, and suggests that militants have spread their influence to new areas.
