A South African socialite and close friend of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, ex-wife of Nelson Mandela, was shot dead as she was on her way to attend the trial of the man accused of murdering her husband, police said. Hazel Crane, 56, was on her way to the Johannesburg High Court to attend the trial of Lior Saadt, who is accused of battering her husband to death in 1999, said police spokesman Chris Wilken. “The man apparently appeared from behind a (rubbish) bin and fired six shots at Crane through the passenger window,” Superintendent Wilken told the SAPA news agency. “She was hit in the head, chest, leg and arm,” he added. A friend of Crane’s, who was in the car with her, was hit in the hand, Wilken added. Crane was to be called as a state witness during the trial, but was not scheduled to testify on Monday, SABC radio news reported. Full Story
