Poland Buries First Soldier Killed in Iraq
Poland on Monday buried its first soldier killed in Iraq, vowing the loss would not stop it from completing its mission to help bring stability to the country. Major Hieronim Kupczyk, 44, died in an ambush last Thursday. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of colonel by President Aleksander Kwasniewski. “Polish troops are in Iraq to defend the highest values — those of freedom and peace,” Kwasniewski said in a graveside oration in Szczecin, where Kupczyk’s division is based.
