Philippine prosecutors dropped coup charges against 290 soldiers on Friday over a mutiny in July but vowed to bring 31 officers involved in the uprising to trial. Critics said the let-off for the soldiers was aimed at placating the military while a political row raged over an attempt to oust the nation’s top judge. A group of lawmakers from the opposition Nationalist People’s Coalition accuse Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide of misusing public funds. They plan to seek an impeachment trial against the highly respected judge in the Senate next week. The crisis over Davide, which has exacerbated investor uncertainty ahead of next May’s election, could deepen on Monday if the Supreme Court issues a favorable ruling on separate petitions to stop the move to unseat him.
