U.S. soldiers have moved into northeastern Afghanistan to launch a new operation against Islamic militants in Nuristan and Kunar provinces, a military spokesman said on Monday. Colonel Rodney Davis said “Operation Mountain Resolve” had begun on Friday with troops from the 10th Mountain Division being dropped from the air to clear the area for a larger deployment. “The purpose of Operation Mountain Resolve is to destroy and disrupt anti-coalition forces and deny sanctuary to them,” Davis told a briefing at Bagram Air Base just north of Kabul. He added that Afghan forces were also involved. He did not specify the target of the latest operation by some 11,500 U.S.-led soldiers in Afghanistan. The Kunar and Nuristan region is believed to be where renegade warlord and former Prime Minister Gulbuddin Hekmatyar is most active. Full Story
