In a crowded marketplace in eastern Guatemala, mayoral candidate Salvador Arguitia points to where his running mate was killed, one of two dozen victims of political violence in the runup to Sunday’s general election. Salvador Aguilar was shot in the back last month while buying food after a meeting held by National Hope Unity, or UNE, a party led by presidential candidate Alvaro Colom. Fearing for their lives, Arguitia and local UNE congressional candidate Willy Escobar travel with an escort of six armed men. Arguitia carries a high-caliber handgun and says he will have to leave the country if he loses. “It could be us next,” Escobar said, shifting across the front seat to look in the rear-view mirror as a black pickup truck with polarized windows approached from behind.
