The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it was temporarily closing its offices in Baghdad and Basra amid worsening anti-US violence in Iraq, including the killing of two soldiers and the downing of a Blackhawk helicopter. Iraq’s interim Governing Council meanwhile welcomed Turkey’s decision not to send forces to Iraq. The US-backed body fiercely opposes the idea that its neighbours — especially Ankara — send any troops to restore stability. But Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul urged the United States not to show bias towards Iraqi Kurds, warning Saturday that Ankara would not refrain from taking military action if it perceived a security threat emanating from Iraqi soil.
