Sri Lanka’s security was in “great danger” because Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s government had allowed Tamil rebels to boost their military strength, the country’s president claimed. “During the last two years, the sovereignty of Sri Lanka’s territorial integrity and the security of the nation has been placed in great danger by acts of… wilful neglect,” President Chandrika Kumaratunga said. In a televised address to the nation she accused Wickremesinghe’s administration of holding back money needed to maintain naval craft and airforce planes while allowing a free hand to the Tiger rebels. “Numerous arms shipments have been brought into the country (by the rebels),” she added, explaining why on Tuesday she wrested the defence portfolio from Wickremesinghe.
