WIRELESS local area networks (LANs), thanks to their low cost and ease of deployment, are one of the fastest growing networking technologies around. The technology offers the ability to save money by extending networks without costly rewiring, and allows employees to roam between different areas of their office without being bound by the wires traditionally associated with networks. But organisations are rapidly deploying Wireless LANs without realising or considering the associated security risks. It could be said that the convenience of the Wireless LAN set up is also its biggest security weakness. A recent survey or “war drive” of 150 wireless networks, carried out by Celare, the information security specialists from Newell & Budge in Edinburgh, found that 69 per cent used no encryption at all.
