125 Companies Named in DRC Plunder Report

THE UN panel investigating the plunder of mineral resources in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has named 125 companies and individuals who stand accused of having contributed to the DRC conflict. However, a section of the report which describes in detail “how exploitation of resources enables financing of arms, which in turn perpetuates the conflict,” was given to the Council on a confidential basis, the UN news service said yesterday. The panel’s fourth and final report made public on Tuesday is due to be formally delivered on Thursday to the Security Council by chairman Mahmoud Kassem of Egypt. “The approximately 125 companies and individuals listed in today’s report had been named in a previous report by the panel for having contributed directly or indirectly to the conflict in the DRC,” said the UN news service.
