An Islamic Jihad militant was killed by Israeli army fire at dawn in the northern Gaza Strip, a few hundred yards from the Israeli border, Palestinian security sources and medics said. The security sources said another man accompanying the militant from the hardline group was arrested by the army. They identified the slain Palestinian as Mohammed Awad, 26, who they said was active in Islamic Jihad’s military branch, the al-Quds Brigades. Israeli military sources confirmed the killing and said a cellular phone and sketches of the area had been retrieved by a search party.
