The top Norwegian army general monitoring a ceasefire in Sri Lanka left for Oslo Wednesday after President Chandrika Kumaratunga demanded his sacking, officials here said. Major General Tryggve Tellefsen returned home for consultations with Norwegian peace brokers who appointed him, an official of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) said. Kumaratunga has pressed for the immediate firing of Tellefsen, head of the SLMM which is charged with observing the truce between government forces and Tamil Tiger rebels in place since February last year. “In order to ensure a continued process of smooth monitoring of the ceasefire agreement, a speedy replacement of Maj. Gen. Tellefsen as head of the SLMM is all that is required,” Kumaratunga’s office said Monday. Full Story
