Sudan Says Hopes for Deal with Rebels by Year-End

Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Osman Ismail said the government hoped to strike a peace deal with rebels by the end of the year, but obstacles still remained to ending Africa’s longest running conflict. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Wednesday that Sudan’s government and rebels had given him a commitment that they would conclude a deal to end the 20-year war by the end of December, spurring hopes of an end to the conflict. Aid workers estimate that two million people have died, mainly from hunger and disease, in the latest cycle of conflict that broke out in 1983, while millions have fled their homes. Full Story
