Pakistani troops have captured 230 Al-Qaeda suspects during a swoop on the north-western tribal region of the country that borders Afghanistan. The operation, launched earlier this month, was continuing in phases, Lieutenant-General Ali Muhammad Jan Aurakzai told a team of foreign diplomats on Saturday. Three phases of Operation Al-Meezan, or balance, had been completed in the rugged tribal terrain and a fourth was under way, state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported. The general was talking to 20 ambassadors and military attaches at his headquarters in the north-western city of Peshawar. During the operation, more than 230 suspects believed to belong to the Al-Qaeda terrorist network were rounded up while another 10 were killed.
