Businesses are patching and locking down their computer networks, and this is driving hackers to resort to alternative methods of gaining access. Obtaining confidential passwords using social engineering techniques is fast becoming hackers preferred method. Now heres the worrying part … In a recent online survey of IT experts within some of the UKs largest businesses, an alarming 15% of the experts provided their computer passwords in order to enter a prize draw. The survey was conducted by IT assurance provider, NCC Group. The questionnaire surveyed more than 150 people in a bid to assess how vulnerable the IT systems of UK business and public sector organisations actually are. The final question in the survey asked respondents to enter their password to be included in a prize draw. Despite the fact that this information would give a hacker open-access to private IT networks, an incredible 15% of people opted to give their password, before the online survey pointed out their mistake.
