A former senior loyalist has fled north Belfast after a failed attempt to overthrow the organisation’s current leader in that part of the city. Jim Simpson is understood to have left Northern Ireland on Monday after trouble in the Ballysillan and Glenbryn areas within the ranks of the Ulster Defence Association (UDA). Simpson formerly held the rank of brigadier within the organisation and was a member of the UDA’s so-called inner council. A UDA source described the situation in north Belfast as serious and said those behind the overthrow move had no choice but to leave the country.
