JEMAAH Islamiah (JI) has been shaken by the arrest of its operations chief Riduan Isamuddin alias Hambali and key leaders but is still a force and could strike soft targets. Regional terror experts have trashed Hambali’s assertion that JI is ‘collapsing’ and has been ‘destroyed’ in confessions to his interrogators, as reported by Time. They say JI continues to draw in new members and generate funds from multiple sources. With many senior group leaders at large, an anti-West ideology that still lures dozens in Indonesia and elsewhere and a regional enforcement network that is not completely geared up, it is unlikely that JI is on its way to closing shop.
