Israeli soldier killed when gunmen fire across border

An Israeli soldier was killed Monday by gunfire from across the border with Lebanon a day after Israel struck deep in Syria in retaliation for a Palestinian suicide bombing. After the shooting, an Israeli general warned Syria, accusing it of stoking the violence. The army said masked gunmen wearing the uniforms of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah guerrilla group killed the soldier when they fired at a patrol along the fence separating Israel from southern Lebanon. Troops returned fire after the shooting near Kafr Kila, a Lebanese border village, a military spokesman said. Reports from Kafr Kila said Israeli gunfire hit a water truck of the United Nations peacekeeping force, two other vehicles and several houses, but there were no casualties.
